Look Who’s Two!!!

What a trip it has been! From re-learning all the baby routines to helping a big sister learn that it’s not all about getting to be a ‘little mommy’.  Now that she’s 2 her independent little personality is coming out.  As if you could have guessed it would go any other way.  She is learning to hold her own in conversations as well.  Her vocabulary went past 300 some time ago and we have focused on more important things…  Like trying to reason with her about her diaper.  I don’t think Joscelyn thought she would be trying to reason with a two year old who takes her own diaper off during nap if it gets wet.  Joscelyn walked into her room the other afternoon to find her standing in her crib, holding a wet diaper and saying “doaking wet Mommy.  It doaking wet, I know.”  Hard not to at least smile.  She is still talking about her finger the chicken pecked to get the bread..

Yes Technically this should have gone up ‘yesterday’ but, with Easter, three birthdays, and my wife’s pending abdominal surgery, the week has just ran right away from us…

Home Tweet Home.

I heard somewhere that the state (or county) had cut back on their mosquito spraying this year. It has been buggier, that’s for sure. It’s not too bad on the farm though, we just added a few of these little homes (made by dear ol Dad). Fun to watch the swallows dip and swoop and gobble up bugs by the bucket! This is a Violet Green, we also have a few Barn Swallows in the loafing sheds, where they build their little mud nests. Natural pest control at it’s best! Talk about Green Living!

It’s almost out of my system…

Almost.  I have really enjoyed my little trip back into the world of film.  I don’t know that I will make a habit of this.  I can see myself shooting a lot of stuff for myself with film.  It’s really let me be part of the moment, not just watching it.  It’s nice though to shoot, and not deal with post till, well, later.  If at all.  At most, the shots I have up here in film (the entire site) are just shot, scanned, and uploaded.  I will nuke a dust spot if it’s really distracting but that’s it.  Oh and I crop just a bit.  Sometimes.  Deets: Nikon F5, 50mm 1.4, 400NC.

Not trying to compete…

I hit one of those “moments” that photographers look for.  Henri Cartier-Bresson is…  OK, I am not going to try to get him summed up here.  Instead look here, and here.  Look cause otherwise the whole “moment” thing is going to be lost on you.   And frankly I think this shot stands on it’s own.  This is a moment, and an expression that I have been trying to capture for several years.  Totally candid, and yes.  Her shoe was wet.

Shooting eggs on the farm…

Here are a few of our farm fresh eggs.  Again there I go with the film…  Shot with my (snif) Mamiya 645.  Sometime last year…  I have a few more film shots to put up, and then I will be done for a while.  Really.  I mean it.

That’s right.  Shot and scanned and that’s it.  No post (well except for the watermark).

Oh and while you are at it, take a look at the Seed Savers Exchange (we get some of our seeds from them).  They have a really informational post about raising chickens in the city, with two really good links at the bottom to other resources for “urban poultry”.

Hay! From Camano to Stanwood….

Well we ran out.  It was to be expected, our barn doesn’t hold enough hay to get us all the way through winter.  We chatted up a good friend and she put us in touch with a couple on Camano Island with a bunch of good local hay.  A few weeks ago we went and picked it up.  Our little gal had a blast climbing around on the trailer and again up in the loft.  It was almost pitch black by the time I finished loading up the hay in the barn, auto focus was a challenge, and it’s lit with one SB-600 off camera.  Fun stuff, and nice to have company in the loft!

Know your gear.

I was listening to my current favorite podcast of all time yesterday.  “The Image Doctors” by the Nikonian group.  The guys spend more on camera gear in a year that I could imagine.  They basically have everything, but it typically doesn’t get me into full blown NAS (Nikon Acquisition Syndrome).  Thank goodness.  They have great tips and such, as well as guests from time to time.  They were interviewing Thom Hogan who travels a lot.  The tidbit I got out of this that I think warrants bringing up at this time of year is not getting new gear just before a big trip.

Producing quality images, take familiarity.  The camera needs to be as much second nature as a bicycle.  Most people opening imaging equipment this holiday season will get that idea on Christmas morning.  They will pull the new camera out of it’s box and not expect to be Jay Maisel.  As long as they shoot it a bunch before the trip this summer that the will want to make some great images on.

And with that last bit, I plan on “gasp” pre-posting some content for the holidays.  Hopefully aimed at folks who are wanting simple pointers, get started stuff that they can apply with their shiny new precious.  Most of it will point you elsewhere.  Although I’ve been told I should teach, I’m not.  At least yet.  I do however (sorry honey) spend lots of time scrounging the web for inspiration/technique/skills.  And I’m going to open my FireFox favorites and pick some gems.

Stay Tuned!

Hoop it up!

It was really fun last weekend!  My folks had some milestone birthdays and a whole pile of folks showed up for food fun and hoop housing!  Lots of people I didn’t know (that doesn’t surprise me) and lots of folks I did!  It was a great success!  I’ve managed a work party or two, and unless you are used to coordinating tasks and materials for 15-20 people it can be a bit overwhelming.  It really did go well, with all but the front door done and the plastic over the top!  Here are a few shots….

“Go Fish!”

Kids are great!  I had a wonderful and rousing game of go fish with my eldest last nigh.  She though it was funny that I was taking photos of her hands and the cards.  I was reading somewhere the other day about photographing babies, making sure to get their “little parts” that will be so much bigger later….  Here are a few that I liked.  All with the 50 1.4..

A lazy Sunday…

Had a wonderful dinner at the grandparents house on Sunday.  Our oldest got to pick some Tomatoes with her Grampa, and we took a nice walk through the flowers.  There was a humming bird, really fearless, I’ll see if I can find one of those I liked…

Here are a few of my favorites…

Here are the Tomatoes!

The Peaches aren’t ripe yet, but they will be soon!

One more from the Park.

Just finished processing ~200 shots from the softball game this last Sunday.  Lots of fun!  I’ll try to get one or two up in the next day or two.  Here’s one shot from the other day at the arboretum.  I missed it on my first pass, but noticed it when I dove into the July folder for the Softball photos.  Loving the new PC, pushed 170 Raw files into full sized JPG’s in under 4 min.  Used to take 20!  Love it!

Enjoy the shot!

Flowers in her hair….

Very busy weekend.  Lots of changes at our church, a tea with wonderful women most of them old enough to be my grandmother.  A birthday party for a very special 5 year old and a “memorial service” for a family/person who isn’t dead.  I did have a little bit of decompression time on Sunday, and my oldest let me try my hand at braiding, with some Ranunculus repens for color.  Nothing like a pro, but not bad for a Dad, right?

Edit: link to pp&p blog, that’s what I’m talking about.
